Top 10 shows at the Acheron for 2010

Although I'd always want to say that every show we got to have this year was awesome, there were definitely a few that really stood out. Before I get into this, I want to thank all the promoters, bands, and everybody who's come out to all our shows for really making it happen this year. HAILS!!

that said, here are my 10 favorite shows we did this year:

1) AGE / HELLSHOCK / KAKKA HATA 77 / ACID REFLUX - This show was exactly why we have bands play. Super late. Super drunk. Super fucking party. Over 100 kids showed up after the Knitting Factory gig to see a show that started at 2 in the morning! Crazy night for fucker!

2) WORMROT / MUTANT SUPREMACY / DEFEATIST / CURANDERA / PSYCHIC LIMB - Holy shit this was amazing. The last show of WORMROT'S first US tour and they made it count. Thanks a ton to Brooklyn Vegan and 1000 Knives for making this happen!

3) INNUMERABLE FORMS / MAMMOTH GRINDER / NAUGHTY GIRLS - there's a reason these guys are coming back this year. Unbelievable brutality. Pure hatred condensed into pummeling riffs.

4) TRASH TALK / LA DISPUTE / CEREBRAL BALLZY / PSYCHIC LIMB - this was one of our very first shows, and boy did we kick it off with a BANG! 300 kids showed up out of nowhere and took over. Trash Talk put on one of the most punishing live sets in modern hardcore, and they did not disappoint. Also, this was the first time I got to witness the fury of Psychic Limb, and I have not forgotten.

5) AUSTIN LUCAS / DAMIEN SUOMI - I've known Austin for a number of years, but primarily as the guitar player in the international crust powerhouse GUIDED CRADLE. How could I have known that he also writes and plays the most heartbreaking, most powerful country & folk music I've heard in a decade? This guy blew me away and to this moment I listen to his newest album "Somebody Loves You" daily.

6) THE BODY / ATAKKE / BAD DREAM / CURANDERA - holy fucking noise. What can you say about duo who is louder than EVERY OTHER BAND YOU'VE EVER HEARD. The Body destroyed me. And they're coming back in April with WHITE HORSE and UNEARTHLY TRANCE. Get stoked!

 7) SHITSTORM / POLLUTION / CURANDERA / DIVORCE MONEY - Who could argue with members of TORCHE and CAPSULE playing amazing grind? This band destroyed for a blistering 15 minute set. I could have watched them all day. Not to diminish POLLUTION, who put out one of the best LPs of the year, and killed it on our stage 4 times this year.

8) WOLVSERPENT / PHARAOH / ARCHON - soul crushing funeral doom. Cinematic. Operatic. Despair-inducing. Boise's WOLVSERPENT was another amazing surprise. Their dark, haunting 30 minute eponymous opus stayed with me for weeks.

9) EASY ACTION / PREGNANT / THE MEN - dirty. but in just the right way. That's the only way to describe Detroit's EASY ACTION . They rocked out as hard as i've  ever seen anyone, and they did it as drunk as i've seen anyone. what a blowout.

10) BEER & CABLE / HELLBENT HOOKER / BORN LOOSE / UNSCATHED - Beer & Cable have been without a doubt my favorite punk band in NYC for some time. Their irreverent, silly, and stop-on-a-dime hardcore is so much fun you can't contain yourself. Also T-Bone had his dick out the entire HELLBENT HOOKER set. So there are no pictures. Just imagine that for yourself.

It's been too long...

...since I've had a chance to update the blog, so let's get back down to business! Due to some unfortunate circumstances, This Saturday's double header is cancelled. But fear not! We've got a hell of a lineup this week starting with Sunday.

Listen Listen from Houston play haunting, lonely, memorial hymns baked by the Texas sun and aged by the dust of the plains. Their last LP, "Hymns from Rhodesia" made the top lists of 2009 by everyone from bloggers to Rolling Stone. Their new album, "The Dog" delivers more acheful country / folk tinged with gospel and even some experimentation into more modern sounds. Joining them this Sunday are Chicago's Conductive Alliance, who's recent EP "Water Glyphs" has received critical acclaim over the last year; and Brooklyn indie faves Bad Credit No Credit and Binary Marketing Show.

Copenhagen's HJERTESTOP were here a couple years ago, and tore the charleston apart. This year we're lucky enough to have them at the Acheron, sharing the stage with Brooklyn rippers NIGHT BIRDS and CERVIX, who just opened for AGE and HELLSHOCK at the Knitting Factory Saturday night. This one should really not be missed!

James's Pop punk weekend for the kids! AFTER THE FALL / THE MENZINGERS

So we can't be all "doom and gloom" all the time, can we? We've had a great run over the last few weeks with THRONES, WOLVSERPENT, NATUR, WORMROT and LITURGY, but maybe we should cheer up a little... So our buddy James at CITY LIGHTS brought us a couple of big time pop punk and hardcore shows this weekend to get the kids who actually don't wear black all the time:

AFTER THE FALL from Albany just released their third LP, ERADICATION on MIGHTIER THAN SWORD Records, and the kids have been going crazy for it. Similar to Propagandhi or Strike Anywhere, AFTER THE FALL play fast, politicized punk that rides the line between hardcore and pop-punk. Just pogo the shit out of this.

Then on Sunday, we've got a brutal Nor-Easter coming down from Maine. Just like Old Man Winter, Portland's OUTBREAK is an unforgiving blast of ice-cold harshness that would kill a weaker person. Fast, Angry, and out of control, OUTBREAK would be likely to destroy our fair space if we hadn't just recently reinforced the walls. Get ready for moshtastic good time.

EPIC WEEK AHEAD!!! LITURGY Saturday, WORMROT Sunday, WOLVSERPENT Tuesday!!!

What a fucking week we have ahead of us!! Serious metal for the serious metalhead. Saturday we have the impossible-to-describe but easy-to-love neo-black metal of Brooklyn's LITURGY, sharing the stage with the ever-epic BATILLUS, and the mighty riffmasters KOWLOON WALLED CITY. Batillus and KWC played the Cake Shop last month, but I fear some of y'all missed it on account of some hardcore show. Well, don't sleep on this one! a SERIOUS night of epic heaviness. Saturday, Oct 2 8pm Doors

Kowloon Walled City @ Cakeshop

Sunday! SUNDAY! SUNDAY!!! the grindcore battle royale is finally here. We're so stoked to have this maelstrom upon us! Singapore's WORMROT will finally make it to Brooklyn to pummel us all with blast and breakdowns, along with the cream of the NYC blastbeat crop: MUTANT SUPREMACY, DEFEATIST, PSYCHIC LIMB, and CURANDERA. this will be a crowded and manic scene of destruction, so get here on time! Sunday, Oct 3rd 8pm Doors.

WormRot
And for those who like their music slow, crushing, and overflowing with despair, fear not! (or rather, no more than normal) Tuesday, the Boise duo WOLVSERPENT play this coming Tuesday to steamroll over your spirit. Aiding in the bleakness are Brooklyn doomlords ARCHON (hopefully you saw them with UNEARTHLY TRANCE and COFFINWORM last month) and New Jersey cryptkeepers PHARAOH. Oh the autumn, how I enjoy the falling leaves, fog, and soul-crushing doom as the all life leaves the earth. Tuesday, Oct 5th 8pm Doors.

and since we don't have a gig tonight, I'll see y'all at BUZZOV*EN!!!

If you don't know his name off the top of your head, LEARN IT because you'll want to see him at every appearance. He's had his own tv specials, released a CD, had a run on his own television series, and is known all over New York as "the cable guy" on those Verizon commercials. None of that compares, however, to when you just give the guy a mic and let him run with it. We've also got JORDAN HUBERT, HEATHER FINK, MAX BOYAJIAN, and JHOEL WALKOWSKI performing, and the whole thing is hosted by the dark and lovely STEPHEN BIANCHI. Not a night to miss!

THE BODY return next week!! buy new earplugs!

DECEASED rip apart the Acheron THIS SATURDAY!!

Legendary Virginia Death Metallers DECEASED have officially been playing for 25 years. In that time they have maintained everything that is worthy of praise in the metal world: An unholy stream of brutal albums, a workaholic attitude toward writing, recording, and especially playing, and an unmatched performance style. Band founder King Fowley is a force to be reckoned with, both physically and as a stalwart of the east coast death metal scene. We're really excited to host these titans as they celebrate 25 years of brutality. Also on the bill are Brooklyn party thrashers VERMEFUG, UNDIVIDED, and GROTSQUE EUPHORIA.

Lineup announced for this tuesday's REBELS WITHOUT APPLAUSE

We were so stoked on the first REBELS WITHOUT APPLAUSE stand-up comedy night last week, we decided to keep them going twice a month from here on out. Keeping in line with the first, we're pleased to announce some really A list talent headlining this coming Tuesday's show:

JULIAN McCULLOUGH has appeared in his own Comedy Central special, as well as having a recurring role in the hit IFC show Z-ROCK.

MIKE LAWRENCE is one of the top new faces at this year's JUST FOR LAUGHS fest in Montreal. He's been around the NY scene for a few years and has deservedly gathered quite a following.

This week's lineup also includes our pal STEPHEN BIANCHI, JESSIE RICHARDSON, and LANCE WEISS. As always, there's no cover, so just show up and laugh til you puke!

JUST ANNOUNCED! WORMROT OCTOBER 3rd with MUTANT SUPREMACY, DEFEATIST, PSYCHIC LIMB, CURANDERA

We are super stoked to finally get to announce this show. Singapore's WORMROT play the most amazing straightforward grindcore there is. No hyperblast, no goregrind foolishness. Just perfectly executed grindcore, the way it was meant to be played. Brings to mind the original british masters like NAPALM DEATH or EXTREME NOISE TERROR. This is their first US tour, and despite some visa problems which prevent them from playing Santos' Party House tonight, the tour will start this weekend, and we get them for their last date. Filling out the bill is an all-star cast of New York deathgrinders: MUTANT SUPREMACY, DEFEATIST, PSYCHIC LIMB, and CURANDERA. Mark your calendars, and do NOT miss this show.

KHANN / MOCKINGBIRD tonight! STARKWEATHER Saturday!

From Sludgeswamp.com

For those of you that don't know, Khann play a sort of sludge/grind that's growing increasingly popular these days. There are various possible descriptions: Isis with more anger, Goatsblood with less negativity, Mastodon with less sucking, etc. Perhaps the best parallel would be with Sweden's Crowpath; there seems to be a lot of similarity to that group's 'Son Of Sulfur' release. However, Khann is pretty unique in their own right. Tempos frequently swing from blistering grindcore to ultra-slow sludge on a dime, and each performer seems to play their respective instruments and scream their individual lyrics in a particularly (well, not enthusiastic) insistent manner. Above and beyond this, there's a sense of melody that seems more developed than your average grindy sludgy corey whatever band that makes the music actually enjoyable to listen to on its own right, as opposed to through a lens of progressiveness. Khann seems to be at their best when they're venturing into post-hardcore or whatever you want to call it Isis-style territory. It's subtle, but most certainly there on songs like 'Black Water Permiates', 'Leeches', or, the best track on the demo, 'Squall'. If you can let yourself soak in this moments which seem to represent Pelican listening to too much Napalm Death, then you'll be faced with easily the best and most emotional (though I'm sure they'd hate that descriptor) parts of this release. Hell, I'd even describe those parts as sublime. The noisy parts are all well and good, but if you look at the songs as being structured in an almost post-rock way (with the noisy parts as the instrumental sections and the emotional parts as the climaxes), the overall feel of the music is greatly improved. Flaws? Well, it's pretty damned inconsistent, to be honest. I'd say the music jumps around a little too much, but of course this is simply a matter of taste more than any objective critique. It seems that certain songs on here are designed to fit some sort of perceived requirement for 'brutal' music; the gap between tracks like 'Squall' and the lesser ones like the title track is just too damned big to ignore. Luckily, the good parts are so damned good that you can easily ignore the less pleasant portions and just bask in the ones that work so flawlessly. I'd say that if Khann concentrated on tracks such as 'Squall' (which really seems to represent their personal style), they could be one of the premier bands in the... whatever, I'm not going to bother to find a genre, scene. So, 'Tofutopia' generally works out with more hits than misses, much to my pleasure. Check it out here and check them out live; I certainly will be. (Review from: grindingtheapparatus.net).
Khann - Tofutopia: http://miniurl.ws/?r=c7i (Thanx 2 Krustie!)

Sharing the stage with Khann tonight are Ohio metal Warriors MOCKINGBIRD and BEFORE THE EYEWALL, as well as Local mosh maniacs DIVIDER! 8pm $8 ALL AGES

The ultra-influential Philly hardcore / metal band (let's not use that other term) STARKWEATHER has emerged for the grave after nearly a decade of silence. With their new LP "The Sheltering Night" on Deathwish, the innovative technicians blaze through all notions of what hardcore is or could be. They pummel you from the stage Saturday, along with crushing HC/doom monsters RAW RADAR WAR, THE COMMUNION, and PANZERBASTARD for a show dedicated to and benefitting the family of terribly-missed NY promoter and musician Lee Altomare. 8pm ALL AGES.

Tomorrow night (8/21) brings the stench-ridden hand of doom. OILTANKER from connecticut have two blistering EPs of metalcrust that rival the best around. They're touring with fellow yankees ATTENTAT, a punishing battery of kang beat. Richmond's WINDHAND delivers the serious heaviness, though. Best described as "Like knocking back a bottle of whiskey with Wino at a funeral", these southern folks share members with MIGHT COULD and FACE DOWN IN SHIT. please bring ear protection.  Also with DRAIZE and BLACK WING. 8pm $8 ALL AGES

Orlando's KHANN have an axe to grind with everything. These Floridian vegans throw you back and forth between Isis-esque titanism and Page99's furious spasms on their Metal Blade Debut, Tofutopia.
